This section should actually be titled, “After you find that perfect apartment, but before you actually move in.” The period between apartment selection and moving day is critical. Now is when you really need to be organized.

Make sure you know your new address. You will need it for everything from Renters Insurance to Banking. Then make a to-do list, and check it off as you go.

Occupancy Permits Will you need an occupancy permit before you move in? Ask your landlord. If the answer is yes, an occupancy inspection is required (which is the landlord’s responsibility.) Make sure the inspection was done and the premises passed

Check with your municipality’s City Hall. While on the phone, get directions or an address. You will need to go there to fill out the paperwork and pay the fee (average is $25 to $40) for your occupancy permit (usually required before you move in.).

Utilities Are you responsible for water, sewer and trash services? Ask your landlord which utilities you need to order. (The phone numbers are listed under Utilities in the Helpful Services section).

Utility companies in St. Louis generally do not require security deposits to set up service. Most landlords pay for basic services. You are usually only responsible for electric and gas expenses. Many apartments are all electric.

Other Tips Does your landlord require renters insurance? Are satellite dishes allowed? Where can guests park? If you have a pet, make sure you read your landlord’s pet policy (if applicable) thoroughly. Remember, the question is always no unless you ask. So ask!
