There used to be a cutoff point where paying rent was as cost-efficient as buying a house. When you factor in taxes, insurance, maintenance and repairs, owning a home can be an expensive business. Sometimes it's cheaper to rent an apartment.
In an apartment, your grass is cut, snow removed, roof repaired, gutters cleaned, parking lot sealed, flowers planted -- all with little or no effort on your part. For some, the convenience of apartment living is enough.
On the other hand, long-term home ownership almost always means cash equity in your pocket. With as little as 3% down, most gainfully employed persons with good credit can buy a home today.
